As Principal, I am privileged to have recruited a first-class staff team for all our roles. I have an extensive track record in South London schools, at Tamworth Manor High School, Harris Academy Merton and St Mark’s CofE Academy. At each school I have developed both as a professional and as a person. In my first role I honed my love of classroom practice, earning Advanced Skills Teacher status and progressing into senior leadership. This prepared me for Assistant Headship within the Harris Federation, where I was part of a team which took the previously underperforming school to an Outstanding Ofsted judgement within two years. The Harris model showed me how unwavering high expectations, strong leadership and robust systems can bring rapid school improvement. As Senior Vice Principal at St Mark’s and taking on the Interim Principal role I loved working in a values-driven organisation, helping to secure the first Values-based Quality Mark for any London secondary school. I am delighted to have been given the opportunity to take South Bank Engineering UTC from a vision to a thriving operational school. With our final buildings taking shape rapidly and our excellent first cohort performing exceptionally well, all the signs for the future look good!
Kam Bains is our Vice Principal. A chemist by training, Kam has huge expertise in ensuring that teaching and learning are exceptional at the UTC. Kam has particular strengths (amongst many, many others) in developing staff and drawing together an innovative, future-ready curriculum alongside working with our many university and employer partners to make sure we really are ‘School Plus’. Kam is working to make sure that the UTC benefits from the best resources to support learning, including virtual reality, 360 degree video, 3D printing, robotics, micro-scale science and cutting-edge computing.
David Bell is Director of Engineering and a member of the Leadership Team with responsibility for conduct. With a formidable background as an engineer, teacher and lecturer, David brings with him a wealth of experience in constructing high quality engineering programmes of study. Already, students are benefiting from his positivity, high expectations and endless subject knowledge!
Francis Affram is our Lead Science Teacher, leading the teaching of GCSE science, with Year 10 students valuing his breadth of knowledge and thorough lesson preparation with excellent use of resourcing. Francis also teaches A level biology and will be leading the use of our state of the art equipment including video microscopes.
Mark Martin is our computing teacher. Alongside leading our GCSE and A level computer science curriculum, Mark brings with him a staggering range of connections and networks in line with his status as a teacher with one of the largest group of Twitter followers in the UK. A key influencer with Microsoft and Google, the UTC benefits from many opportunities which would otherwise be unavailable to us.
Ruth Vandenhautte is our main English teacher. With experience in a range of schools both state and independent, UK and overseas, Ruth is an expert at bringing the English curriculum to life. An experienced examiner, published author and general super-teacher, Ruth is also supporting the UTC at developing literacy across the curriculum.
Lettie Tang is one of the UTC’s formidable engineering team. An engineering graduate from Cambridge University, Lettie brings huge intellect to the team. She has worked with Jaguar Land-Rover in industry and has a real talent for helping our Year 12s with their engineering maths, not to mention the 3D printing club she is leading.
Shane Beckford is another star member of the engineering teaching team. A graduate from our sponsor university, London South Bank University, Shane has a first-class honours engineering degree. He brings with him a strong understanding of all engineering disciplines on the curriculum, with students very much valuing his calm presentation style and clear communication.
