Opportunities for engineering in the health sector

Engineering in the health sector is very varied. For example, hospitals use a range of equipment to provide diagnosis and the most appropriate healthcare to patients. Such devices range from scanners and nebulisers to radiotherapy equipment and exoskeleton suits; all need designing, developing, manufacturing and testing. Healthcare engineers also work to design and develop new technology and equipment.

This could range from developing more effective prosthetic limbs to more accurate cancer screening. Employers in this field include large multi-national companies such as Siemens and Hitachi.

Within this field students will work with scientists, engineers and healthcare professionals to develop new technologies and devices for the benefit of patients.
