Our distinctive specialisms
At South Bank University Sixth Form in London, our curriculum is focused on three specialist areas that offer excellent opportunities for young people in the city and beyond. Our health program is designed for students who aspire to become nurses, midwives, physiotherapists, doctors, healthcare scientists, or work in health technology and allied health professions. Our engineering curriculum supports learners who want to make a positive impact on the world through fields such as mechanical, electrical, civil, automotive, and aerospace engineering. Our business and finance program prepares students for careers as accountants, management consultants, auditors, entrepreneurs, bankers, or investment managers, as well as many other roles. These specialised curricula offer a range of career paths for students to pursue at our Sixth Form college.
Our distinctive curriculum
We offer a range of curriculum pathways to support students’ aspirations and career goals. Our T levels provide a technical alternative to A-level programs, with a focus on a specific discipline in health, engineering, or business and finance. These qualifications are designed with input from employers to give learners the knowledge and skills they need in their industries and include 45 days of high-quality work placements. Our BTEC program allows students to gain a broad range of knowledge in health, engineering, or business, preparing them for higher education, apprenticeships, or careers. A-Levels offer a pathway through specialized subject disciplines. Our T-level Transition Programme and Professional Pathway offer a valuable one-year path to progress to apprenticeships or level 3 as part of a three-year Sixth Form program, including the attainment of GCSEs in English and math. We also offer level 4 content and qualifications to our Year 14 students to prepare them for successful career destinations.
Ofsted (September 2022) recognised the good quality of our education. They write:
- ‘Leaders are ambitious to develop pupils’ employability skills in preparation for their future… pupils gain strong employability skills and develop their confidence and independence.’
- ‘Provision for careers education, advice and guidance is excellent.’
- ‘Pupils are happy and safe here. They behave well in lessons and have positive attitudes to their studies.’
- ‘Pupils build a strong understanding of key subject knowledge over time.’
- ‘Teachers have strong subject knowledge… They identify when pupils have not understood and give them the support they need.’
Our distinctive enrichment
Regardless of their chosen pathway, our students at South Bank University Sixth Form in London benefit from a wide range of unique, distinctive, and powerful enrichment opportunities. Our employer sponsors and partners include some of the city’s largest employers, such as Guy’s & St Thomas’ and King’s NHS Trusts, Skanska, Fujitsu, Morgan Sindall, and PwC. These partners work with us to co-design and co-deliver the curriculum through employer-led projects and drop-down days, giving our students unparalleled development of the knowledge, skills, aptitudes, and attitudes that employers are looking for. These experiences also allow our students to build powerful supporting statements to help them achieve their next steps.
Our distinctive facilities
At South Bank University Sixth Form, we are fortunate to have a building in London that was purpose-built for technical and professional education. Our modern facilities include science labs, high-end computing spaces, professional study areas, and cutting-edge engineering and health suites. These resources and facilities give our students an advantage and include simulated health equipment, a 3D printing workshop, and a carbon fibre fabrication workshop. These resources allow our students to gain hands-on experience and develop the skills they need to succeed in their chosen careers.
LSBU Group
We are extremely proud to be part of the London South Bank University Group. Our students benefit from a wide range of touchpoints with the LSBU Group. From lectures and academic delivery led by university lecturers, through LSBU-led projects to build technical knowledge and skills, through advice and guidance, free gym membership, professional qualifications and more, our unique relationship with the LSBU Group supports our students to progress within the Group, but also beyond to selective universities, sought-after apprenticeship placements and more.
